How to Play Alaska Solitaire

Rules

  • Tableau piles are built up or down in the same suit (e.g., a 9♥️ on a 10♥️, or 10♠ on 9♠).
  • You may move any face-up card along with all cards covering it.
  • Only a King or a sequence starting with a King can be moved to an empty tableau pile.
  • Foundations must be built up in the same suit from Ace to King.

Objective

The objective of Alaska Solitaire is to build up all four foundation piles from Ace to King, sorted by suit.

Setup

Alaska Solitaire uses a standard 52-card deck. Here’s how the game is set up:

  • There are 7 tableau piles. The first pile is dealt 1 card face up. The second pile is dealt 6 cards, with the first card face down and the remaining five cards face up. Each subsequent pile receives one more card than the previous pile, always with one additional card dealt face down. For example, the third pile receives 7 cards (2 face down and 5 face up), the fourth pile receives 8 cards (3 face down and 5 face up), and so on.
  • There are 4 empty foundation piles.
  • Unlike Klondike, there is no stock pile.

Variations

Other games that are played similarly to Alaska Solitaire:

  • Yukon Solitaire – tableau piles are built down in alternating colors rather than by suit.
  • Russian Solitaire – tableau piles are built down in the same suit.
